SEND

SEND

Music is a universal language that transcends barriers and brings people together. At Bexley Music, we believe that every child and young person deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of music education. We are fully committed to creating an environment where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is embedded, and barriers to participation are removed. We focus on two key areas: Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Inclusion. These pillars ensure that our music education provision is equitable, accessible, and inspiring for all learners, regardless of their background or ability.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Children and young people with SEND often face unique challenges that can limit their access to music education. Our goal is to break down these barriers by providing tailored resources, adaptive instruments, and specialist support. We believe that music can be a powerful tool for communication, confidence-building, and personal development, and we are committed to ensuring that every learner has the chance to participate fully and meaningfully.

Adaptive Instruments

To make music accessible, we are investing in a range of adaptive instruments designed to meet the needs of learners with physical or cognitive challenges. These include Soundbeams, Skoogs, Clarions, and one-handed clarinets. Where our own resources are insufficient, we will collaborate with neighbouring Music Hubs and specialist providers such as Drake Music to ensure no child is left behind. This investment will enable pupils with SEND to participate in Whole Class Ensemble Tuition and instrumental lessons, ensuring that every child has the tools they need to succeed.

Partnership Working (SEND focus)

Partnerships are key to delivering effective SEND provision. By working closely with schools, specialist organisations, and families, we can create a supportive network that nurtures talent and builds confidence. Our partnerships aim to provide continuity, progression, and opportunities for SEND learners to shine. This includes enhanced opportunities for children with SEND to engage in instrumental music and ensembles, the development of specialist weekly PPA, instrumental and vocal tuition in Special Schools, and exploring progression routes for young SEND musicians.

Action Plan (SEND-specific items)

Our action plan includes practical steps to ensure SEND learners are fully included in music education. This involves creating inclusive ensembles that are easily accessed by all, and developing inclusion champions with expertise in assistive technology and the Sounds of Intent model. These measures will help embed inclusive practices across all programmes and ensure that SEND provision remains a priority.
